I love the cool weather. But I am such a cold wuss. I woke up this morning, and did NOT want to get out of bed. Not because I was tired (okay, well, a little), but because it was just too cold! If the 60's are too cold for me, I better not ever leave Florida! Heh.. But I still like it.
I ended up going to my Nana's house and meeting my brother, sister, and Mother there to help my brother cut back the trees away from her roof. There was no softball today since most everyone is out of town. So it was good that I got out there and did a little work. It's nice to see family again, and to say goodbye to my brother before he heads back up North to school. But he will be back next month. I also just got a call from my Mom asking me if I wanted to head over to my sister's for a ham dinner. I passed since I had just ate about half an hour ago, and since I am not too fond of ham. She NEVER seems to remember that. Ever. Ah, well. Tonight, I am just hanging out at home by myself. My neighbors across the street are just moving in today, too. Hopefully I will finally get this computer working the way I want it to, but I actually have to work on it and stop watching mindless TV. Ah, well. La-tee-da...Entry: 86 Posted by kelly @ 05:11 PM ET [Link]
I noticed my indoor/outdoor thermometer tell me that it was 68' outside, after I went and turned my A/C down a little more. So, I checked the weather to see that a cold front came in, and the next few days are supposed to be wonderfully cool! My windows are now open, and it feels GREAT! Yay! I was chatting online, and did not realize it is 3am already! Wow! Bedtime! heh.. Well, today at work was a moot point. It is still a holiday, except some people had to show. Bla. I left early. And I stopped at my parents' house to see my brother and meet his cat, Bamboo, who he brought with him down from Gainesville. She's an adorable black cat. I don't know if I am allergic to her, because I did not see her much, as she hid under the couch. My brother was not home either, so I did not stay long. (Ironically, I sneezed while typing this - but just a single, which is rare for me!) After that, I met up with Mark at my place. We then went to set up his girlfriend's new computer. We also ended up watching some South Park, Futurama, and Dilbert. After that, I got to chatting with some friends, and here I am. It's a good night, I feel good.

Well, the holiday came and went. It was a blast. It started this morning, around 10 to 11 when my Mom, Dad, and Nana showed up with the food and supplies. Spend most of the start of the day cooking and prepping things. It was a lot of fun. Then my brother and sister and her husband came over. Dinner was excellent. The only hitch was carving the turkey. My dad brought an electric cutter that was older than me, and hasn't been used since before my sister was born. Well, it did not work too well, and kept spitting its blades off and causing turkey to fall to the floor. So it was promptly removed from duty and a standard knife took its place. It was a wonderful evening with family and good food. The only problem is that now everyone is gone. At least they all helped me clean! (And while just waiting around, Nana insisted on cleaning things around the house, too!)

Oops.. I ran out of gas on the way to work this morning. heh.. I felt the engine start to kick, and I knew I was out, so I pulled over immediately instead of torturing the engine. Thankfully, I was already off the turnpike, so I just got some at the closest station (I usually go to Costco). But I feel silly for having let that happen. At least I learned two things out of this:
1) After replacing the gas filler neck, the gague does not go as low as it used to (past E)
2) The "low fuel" light no longer worksAh, well. I should be able to avoid letting this happen again. :)

I was just staring at my receipt for shipping back my latest casualty back to the manufacturer under RMA replacement. It says "FedEx Ground Commercial" - on a UPS form. How it actually went out, I don't know. I don't care either. But it has reminded me about how often I have been made to send drives back to this place. I have some kind of eerie tendancy to kill harddisks. This latest one was my 160G /store drive, which held EVERYTHING of importance to me. Thankfully, I had the foresight to purchase a 120G drive about a month before its failure to back up the data to.
Since that machine is acting as failover to my server, there is no backup! So, the night before the head crashed, I had decided to refresh the backup. Thank goodness! The really scary part is that this WAS THE BACKUP I had created since the last failure beforehand. At least that one was not complete and immediate - when I started seeing drive failures, I had copied my data over, and some files were in fact lost.
Now, I keep both drives online at all times, in different machines. There is a nightly rsync keeping it up to date, at least up to 24 hours, so the next time I lose a drive, I will have most of the data in another location. I really hope that I will no longer have to deal with these drive failures, and what I have now will just continue to work. But after sending back, oh, at least 8 drives, forgive me if I err on the side of caution.Entry: 82 Posted by kelly @ 02:19 PM ET [Link]
It looks like this year will be Thanksgiving dinner at my house with the family. My parents' kitchen is not yet complete, and the oven is not working, making their house out of the question. My brother will be visiting from his school in Gainesville, and my dad may have the night off of work. My sister wants to have Thanksgiving with her parents, and her in-laws, so we have worked it out that she will be with the in-laws earlier, and we will have our dinner later in the evening. Which is all and good, since I know that it takes all day to make our dinner. I was never really much of a part of the preparation of Thanksgiving dinner, but this year, I may have my chance. Mom and Nana will be over cooking in my kitchen all day. I plan to be as helpful as possible, and not be in the way. I am looking foward to this, as I have not seen the family together in some time - let alone at my own place! Family is important to me, and I am glad to be able to host an important part of it. Also, it would be nice to make the place feel a little less empty for a change.

Today was a good day, after work, I spent some time with Dad again. It's really nice out, and I am not so sore from practice anymore. All was great until I got home and ate dinner. I must have done something to piss it off, as it is in a bad mood in my tummy.. Ugh.. I hope it passes soon. On top of that, now I have a backache - but at least I think it's one that will not last long. On top of all that, I've had a toothache since yesterday. Last time I had one, it turned out to be something else that was just causing my tooth to ache. I can't remember for the life of me what it was though. I think it was the start of a cold. I hope this is the same, because I really do not want to have to go see a dentist before my medical benefits kick in around January. Oh, well, we'll see. For now, I just hope this stomachache does not get any worse...

Today (well, Sunday) was a relatively lazy day, but that aside, I am glad to have gotten a few little things out of the way. When I woke up, I was rather sore from the previous day's baseball practice. Therefore, I was not very inclined to get out of bed. So, the first few hours of my day were spent in bed, poking around on the laptop. Finally, I decide to get up and make some lunch. After that, I figured it would be a good time to take my laptop apart for the who knows what time, and fix it once and for all (hopefully). So, I proceed to dismantle it on the livingroom table, while watching TV. This time, I am hoping it will last, because I finally got crazy glue yesterday on my way to practice. Once apart, I glued the piece together, and got a call from Sean S. He wanted me to join him in his Sunday ritual of visiting the local stores and taking advantage of their advertized specials, especially freebies. So, I agreed and drove over there to do so. Afterall, I wasn't going to do much more around the house, as sore as I was. So, we did that, and all I got was a hard drive power Y-cable which I needed (and still have a spare). That took a few hours, and after that, I went to my parents' house. My Dad's work in the kitchen is paying off well, it looks great! But it looks like Thanksgiving dinner is going to be at my house this year. Imagine that, my mother will actually be over again this year! heh.. And Dad was good enough to cook me a good dinner, since he was making a nice dinner for him and Mom also. After I got home, I decided I was going to replace some of the "single outlet" plugs in my house that I wanted to be doubles. Like the outlet for the garage door opener. Now I can plug the buglight in next to it. And the one for the microwave. Now I can utilize that power outlet for the mood lighting. And the one for the washing machine - well, I did not get to that one yet. I was unsure which circuit breaker controled it, since it is upstairs, it was hard to do the "watch for the light to go out" test. So, I will get to that another time. Besides, I do not have anything I need to plug in there right away, but it would be nice to have should I need to use the iron or something. The other outlet in the room is powering the network hub area - firewall, DSL modem, hub, and wireless AP. I was told once there there is entirely too much technology in my house. I would have to agree. But I can't help it! :)

Today was first softball practice. What? Softball? Yup. I heard my manager at work talking about starting up a softball team, so I decided I should join as well. It looks like fun, and can be good excercise. So, I decided to head on out and give it a try, since today was really just messing around, seeing how everyone reacts. It was fun - but I seriously need to work at batting! Either that, or not wear the script sunglasses that were never quite right to begin with. My neighbor across the street loaned me one of his gloves, but now that I think I am going to stay in it, I should get my own. So, first game will be Mon 8 Dec. Hopefully there will be practices before then too, I really need a little practice. But I am looking forward to it!

It's Friday night. This week, sleepwise, was a disaster. I ended up staying two hours later at work for something, and when I left, I went to Sean S's place to help him set up the networking on his new laptop. I was so tired, I practically fell asleep at his place waiting for Phil and Fion to come over. When they arrived, we were going to go out to Friday's for dinner. Somehow, that changed, and we ended up going to some Italian joint. I really wasn't in the mood for Italian tonight. Turns out the wait there was over half and hour, and the food, well, sucked. Bla. So, I get home, and stupidass me sets off the alarm by opening the garage window before going inside or disabling the system, prompting me to go in and cancel it. Fun fun fun.. Then, Sean shows up with his laptop, he wants to snag some software and get it up on my network. Cool. So we're both down on my couch, laptopping away. I am so tired, I think I will be going to bed soon. Earlier than any other night when I DO have to be into work the next morning... Ah, well. Hopefully when I wake up, I can forget about that horrible dinner too...

I am up way too late, again. Was tired at work since I was up way too late yesterday. I need to stop this latetness. But, it is the time when I can get everything done. Mark stopped by, and we went shopping at the local Supercenter, and watched some Futurama, Enterprise, and SouthPark on the ReplayTV while I fixed my laptop lid again. Also, it bluescreened on me again, when I moved it, so I think a DIMM slot is loose or something. Just got to be more careful with it. Work is work. I went to Costco for lunch again. It's closer to walk there than it is to walk to the parking lot I park in, let alone drive wherever it is I would want to go. I think tomorrow, I need something a little more substantial like a good toasted sub! And if only I would remember to bring in my apples! Also, I tried to do some more drive tweeking to tempest, but ended up backing that out. Had trouble getting to my multimedia box from remote, but then I realized I was using the wrong IP address on the wrong LAN. And I finally went and started the ball rolling on something else I've been wanting to do. But more on that later, when I know what is going on with it. At this point, I am not sure what is up, but I do not want it to be a burden on others, as the point of it all is to be the exact opposite of a burden. But if it is going to just cause problems, I don't want to keep it up - that is just counterproductive and benefits noone.

Not much to say today. Got the laptop working with good memory. Working so far at least. But I did post a few followups to earlier posts. So, if you want something to read, you are going to have to go sifting through the comments. hehe..

Tonight, I left work to see my dad, since he is off work Monday's. He was out at work. Again. The place is closed Sun and Mon, but he's worked a special party the last two weeks. Oh, well. Got to talk to Mom, and my sister was there too. Then, I went with Sean S to a local store to buy his new laptop. Yup, he got himself a nice shiny new laptop. Sweet. I also got me a 512M memory module for mine. So I go back home with him to help him get it working on his wireless network. All is good. But it's late, and I go home. Besided, I wanted to install my half-gig gem. I put it in, and it dosen't work. After fighting the configuration a few times, I check the docs (which I had to download). It will take up to 256M chips. ARGH! The package even said works with systems greater than 333mhz! Looks like a return! On the
brighterside, the lid hinge broke again yielding a floppy lid again. I have got to buy some real superglue! [more]Entry: 73 Posted by kelly @ 12:14 AM ET [Link]

Today was a beautiful day. I had opened up all the windows, and decided to BBQ dinner for the night. I had noticed that the ants had left pleanty of sand trails between the cracks of my pavers. Great. Didn't see any, but I made note to spray it and clean up the mess. So, I cooked up a burger and ate it. Afterwards, though, it is a good idea to clean the BBQ. So, a few hours later (after dark), I decide that the BBQ is cool enough to clean up and cover up. I went outside, and opened the hood. Put my hand on the drill surface to see if it was cool (well, duh, it's been a while). It was, but I felt a sting on my hand. After looking at my hand, I saw a few ants on it. EEEP! Flicked 'em off. Looked closer at grill, saw some ants crawling around on it. Went to get flashlight. Saw that it was swarming with ants! Also, they were all crawling around the paver trails, and starting on my feet! EEEEP! So, what would you do when you find your BBQ full of ants? Thats right, I turned on the gas, waited a minute, and fired it up "fireball" style (you know, like when you can't get the flint to spark for a while as the BBQ fills with gas). Hehe.. There go those guys! I let it heat up so they quit crawling around on it. And I go to the garage to get my spray, and came back, turned off the grill, and sprayed all over the pavers. Ugh! Looks like tomorrow, I will be thouroughly cleaning the grill like I did that one time someone decided it would be a good idea to cook BACON of all things on it! It seems just fine, and that spray usually gets rid of the ants (or relocates them to another area), so a descent cleaning out is all the BBQ really needs, and it could use it anyway. I'm just glad they were not there when I had my dinner sizzling on it!

Oops.. I killed my server. Remotely. Ugh. I dont know WHY I keep having troubles with the /store filesystem, but I'm just about to give up on ReiserFS as a filesystem. It may have saved me in the past, but that box has a problem with either Reiser or IDE. I have even moved from the on-board controller to a PCI IDE card. Ugh! Anyway.. Can't fix it now.. Let the mail queue up, and the web pages rot. This IS the failover box! I need my real server back!

There are not enough hours in the day. Sleep takes too long. Whatever, these are just sayings proving the point that it is sometimes difficult to get things done in the time you have. But, you do what you can. I am up late once again, facing less than 4 hours of sleep before starting a new workday. Ah, well. It was worth it. I have been caught up all day thinking about things I thought about last night... Then after work today, I went to my sister's to try and help them with their computer. Although I was able to remove the virii infecting it, it is still working dog-slow. It needs more help than I can give it in one evening. After that, my sister was kind enough to invite me to stay for dinner. It was delish! Thanks, Sis! And the best part was that the cats did not destroy my respritory system this time. It was fun. I do not, however, look forward to dealing with that computer again! heh... After that, I got a call from Mark telling me that they are going to watch a movie at Jeff's place. So, I head up there. We watched 28 Days Later. I loved that movie, and was glad to get the chance to see it again. Also interesting to see were the alternative endings. I don't think the others cared too much for it. Ah, well. After watching the movie, we got into a little discussion about blowing billions of dollars and what not; things I would rather not get into here. After that, I go home, and here I am reflecting on the night. Oh, and the dang laptop crashed again on my first attempt at writing this. Took one chip back out. Ah, well. Work again tomorrow, and most likely I will come home after work, and crash relatively quickly once again.

I am in a strange mood tonight... I just had a wonderful conversation with a friend of mine, and it got me thinking about things that are relevent in my life. I still don't completely understand them, but I am at peace with it. At least for now. I cannot explain it, nor do I have the energy to now try, but it has left me at a point where I have a lot put out on the table laid out in front of me. It is a good thing, and perhaps one day I will be ready to deal with it all, but for now, I can just smile and take it for what it is. Also, Happy Birthday to Mark! I hope it dosen't bother you too much... heh..

I spent most of the day on the truck today, as planned. Replacing the gas line turned out to be more of a pain than I expected. It is attached to the tank by a rather tight lip, and very hard to reach (and unscrew the clamp), but I finally pryed it off. Getting the new one on seemed impossible, until I went to the neighbor's to borrow some plumber's grease. Then, it just slipped right on. Sounds simple, but I was under the truck for quite some time trying to get it to work. Oh, and did I mention it was HOT out today? I also fixed the rattle that started up. Just a loose piece of heat shielding, I stuffed it back behind its clamp. After all that, I went ahead for an oil change. I didn't even make a mess! heh.. So, the truck is doing well. Needs a good cleaning though. Maybe later. I also, with the help of Chris B who stopped by, put the topper back on over the bed. So, now that I got something accomplished, I can get to bed, and start another week of work. Oh joy.

Well, since the last time I wrote about my laptop giving me a hard time, it has been up to its tricks again lately. About two weeks ago, the screen got loose again. I quickly fixed it that night, and got it back again. Then, about a week ago, it went out for a third time! This time, I took it all apart, and made sure I did my best to push that pin in as best I could. Also, I added a dab of contact cement to the end of the post that gets pushed on, hoping that will keep it from popping off again. I hope it works, because I am getting tired of taking it all apart, and I'm sure it will just wear out parts of it more. But, this morning when I went to use it, it came up with something else. There always seems to be something else, dosen't there? I opened it up, and closed iTunes. Then, I saw that I had some unanswered messages that came up in IM. Before I could see how many, or from who, the laptop bluescreens on me. That was stunning, as the laptop NEVER bluescreens on me. But, that did not last but for the better part of a second before it tries to reboot. While rebooting, it quits with a message telling me that Windows could not boot due to a missing or corrupt system file. Last time I got this kind of message, bye-bye windows. I write it down in a hope that I can just replace it and make it work. This time, it was just pci.sys and not the main system file. I accidentally hit a key, and it reboots. Fine, we'll see where it goes. It claims there is a write to memory error now. oh, great! Reboot again.. Memory has changed from 256M to 128M. Reboot! This time, Windows boots up fine (just REALLY SLOOOOW). So, I do a scandisk for good measure, relieved that I don't have to deal with reinstalling the OS again. But what's up? I reboot again, and reset the memory to 256M. Off it, and let it cool down, and I go out. So, I fire it back up not long ago, full memory, and it seems to work fine. I wrote the entire last journal entry, and start this one. It bluescreens again for no good reason, and I lose the post. So, I yanked out one of the memory chips. We'll see if it runs all night now. Later on, when I have a chance, I will put it back in, and run memtest against it. Why does everything have to break on me? Ugh!

As the weekdays have turned into the monotony of work, sleep, and trying to keep in that program, the weekends are a nice getaway from that norm. Although, this week has not exactly been normal. The wonderful tropical weather has made things rather interesting in the way of the typical 35 mile commute. 'nuff said about that. Friday night starts the weekend off with a good Italian dinner in Boca, followed by a DVD. Saturday was the day I was waiting for though. We all piled up in Sean's SUV and headed down to South Miami to watch the new Matrix movie in IMAX. It was incredible! Not necessarily the fact that it was on an 8-story high screen, but the audio is what really did it. The immense surrounding of multiple channels through high-power and high-quality speakers was just wonderful. As far as the movie goes, it was alright - I just don't want to start a Matrix Holy War here... So, afterwards, we headed back up North of the border, and called it a night, although Sean and I hit the local Denny's. Sunday is going to be a busy catch-up day. I need to do laundry, and it is time to work on the truck. I finally got my part in to replace the gas filler neck, so I can get rid of that gas smell, and no more leaks during refueling. I will also tighten down whatever it is down there that has started to rattle lately. I'm also due for an oil change, so I hope to get all that out of the way today. If time permits, I would also like to have the time to work on my new multimedia box - and start getting the graphics frontend working on it, and the PVR software. So, we'll see where the day goes. I have GOT to get myself to sleep at a descent hour though, I cannot get into the lack of sleep thing again, it knocked the hell out of me all this week! [more]

I've been going a little crazy the last few days, trying to install Gentoo Linux on what is going to be my Multimedia machine for the entertainment center. I have not had much problems installing the base system itself, but the real problems came in installing and configuring the wireless ethernet for the system, since I do not have any CAT5 ethernet jacks downstairs (except for one hiding in the kitchen wall behind the phone). So, to install and configure the box, I had an ethernet cable running down the stairs for the better half of what turned out to be a week. Finally, I get it up and running, and remove the cable. Now that the machine is running happily on its own without crutches, I can start on the interesting stuff, like configuring X and the MythTV suite of digital television tools. It will make a good linux box I can get to over the network, and the display will be for the entertainment/multimedia aspect. I wonder how well this will work... :) I think I love to tinker like this more than I like to use the finished product! Heh... But at least I got past the craziness hurdle of pissy drivers and what not. I do NOT want to have to go through this again, I don't even know what I did differently this time of many attempts to get it to work right... But it works, and it reboots just fine...

It's been a while since I've written anything, including a reprise of the vacation. It's just been that I've been both crazy busy and crazy exhausted. I've been installing Gentoo Linux on a few machines for a few projects, including copying my /store drive data to another disk. Also, the other machine, I can't for the life of me get any of three wireless USB network adapters to work (driver issue it seems). More work for later. Other than that, I've been busy with work and driving to and from. Got a parking ticket today. I was "in the roadway"... Yea, tires a few inches over the pavement. Evil. At least I didn't have to walk 10 minutes to the parking lot down the street. And I've been really tired lately. I mean really. It dosen't help that I still can't get to sleep at a descent hour, but I've been tired at work, tired at lunch, tired coming home, tired at home... Tuesday (yesterday), I got home and crashed on the waterbed. But that was because I only got 2-3 hours sleep the night before. I really need to get a descent schedule nailed down. It wasn't too good yesterday at lunch when I found myself getting ready to nod off at lunch - was in a semi-delirious state... But that meeting from hell didn't help either. After I woke up, I wasn't feeling very well - just kind of down. Not much of a depressed down, I am still in my overall good spirits, but just on a downswing. Ah, well, it happens. Today is better. We'll see where things go. I get to look forward to watching the Matrix Revolutions on the IMAX screen this weekend, and fix the cracked fuel filler neck in my truck. Oh joy!

Today was an exceptionally long ride into work. Now, I know I am a good maybe 40 miles away, and I expect it to take a while. Usually an hour. But today was rediculous. I had heard on the radio that there was an accident on my main route, the Florida's Turnpike just before the toll plaza approaching Commercial Blvd. So, instead, I drive out West to Rock Island, and make my way South to Commercial so I can get on the Turnpike from there. Okay, fine. I wanted to try out that new SunPass entry. I have always been quite impressed with Florida's Turnpike. It is a well maintained road, barely any trucks, almost always free-flowing. So, I get in between I-595 and Griffin Rd and notice an undercover FHP car in the median with his lights on. I have noticed them do this a few times now, to get people to slow down for an upcomming traffic jam. Just a little further ahead, traffic came to a crawl. At this point, it had already been an hour since I left home, so the thought of another holdup was a little bothersome. But, I really didn't mind. The music was good, and it gave me a chance to do a bit of thinking about things. All in all, I enjoyed it, especially since there was always a slow flow, no stop-and-go which I can't stand. After a few miles of this, I see what the holdup was. A rather large accident involving an upside-down minivan, and many other vehicles. In the OTHER lane! Now this is what bothers me... The Southbound lane was just fine! Why do these people find it necessary to STOP, or at least slow down drastically, to take a good look, and foul up traffic for miles? I don't know. They should all get rear-ended! But, I will stop now. It really didn't bother me that much today, but I thought it worth mentioning.

Im back home from my little vacation. Tired, relaxed, had a great time. One thing I did notice was that my server had not responded when I tried to get in earlier. I know it had crashed (which is typical, the hardware is dying). But once in a while, it does not restart properly. I figured this to be the case. So, when I got home, I went to see that the server had in fact locked up upon reboot, as it has happened before. Reset. It starts booting again. I hear that ever-not-so-welcome sound of harddrive death clicks. Ugh! Yup, the 180G /store partition, where I keep EVERYTHING of importance to me, died! AGAIN! I just do NOT have luck with harddrives! It was also the live area for /var/spool (therefore mail), and /home since it is acting as failover for my other dead server, qix. I am SO thankful that I had gone out and purchased a 120G drive when I was still unemployed as a backup for this data. Every time I secure a backup, the primary dies. I am also so lucky that I had just performed (manually) a FULL rsync of the entire machine to said 120G drive just the night before, Fri night, before I left for my vacation. So, I lost maybe 28 hours worth of mail and what not. The rest of the mail was queueing up on swift at PickNet. After dropping the backup drive in place, it came back up and is running just as before. I also just filled out the RMA for this drive. They have me on file there, I didn't even have to type my address. I am so getting tired of shipping dead drives off to them! Now I need another backup. I hate running with no backup!

Tonight at Halloween Horror Nights Universal Studios was just plain awesome! We had a great time. Personally, I had such a good time, it is hard to explain... Although I have realized that is getting harder and harder to do this myself without someone special to share it with... Anyway, it is late, and we are about to crash in the hotel. I write this waiting for shower rations, so I will revisit here later...

Well, we are en-route to Orlando. I type this from the back of Sean's SUV on the way up the Florida's Turnpike. I am also typing this in an attempt to keep from witnessing his driving skills. Also, IMing a bit too... Keeps the trip busy.. But, I think Im going to shut it down soon, so I can relax; and we will be stopping for lunch soon too... Don't want to have my spread open, then leave it sitting in an empty car... So, I'll be posting more later... [more]
